WEAVING THE NEXUS
Design Research and Strategy

Prompt
To apply a transformation design methodology through the process of creating a design strategy for a community in New York City.

Design SolutionInspired by the importance of independent archiving institutions in New York City, this project started with a series of ethnographic research methodologies with Asia Art Archive in America (AAAinA). Following the findings from the immersion and the interview, we found that AAAinA was trying to broaden their audience to Asian/Asian-American art and design students.

Therefore, the project seeks to develop a strategy to attract art and design students to conduct on-site desk research at a new library and archive that they have never visited.

A cultural probe was designed and disseminated in order to understand the behavior of AAAinA's intended new audience towards in-person/on-site research, which was then further developed into a design concept that was created based on the findings from the design probe results and follow-up interviews.
